Hello, I'm

Carter Smith

Computer Engineering student at Miami University building real-world automation, embedded, and control systems.

About Me

I'm a senior Computer Engineering student at Miami University (Oxford, OH) with a minor in Computer Science, graduating May 2026. I'm passionate about bridging the gap between hardware and software — designing control systems that work reliably in real industrial environments.

My hands-on experience at Complete Automation has given me direct exposure to configuring PLCs, HMIs, and industrial networks from design through on-site commissioning. I thrive on solving hard problems and turning complex system requirements into clean, working solutions.

PLC–Smart Relay Communication Integration

Researched an Eaton smart relay's communication architecture, identified its native Modbus TCP protocol, and engineered a protocol converter to bridge it to EtherNet/IP for seamless integration with Allen-Bradley PLC systems. The solution has since been adopted across multiple large-scale plant projects.

  • Reverse-engineered relay communication architecture
  • Designed and implemented Modbus TCP → EtherNet/IP bridge
  • Solution adopted company-wide for plant-scale deployments

PLC Controls Course Development & System Implementation

Co-developed a comprehensive industrial automation curriculum at Miami University, covering safety, industry standards, and hands-on PLC programming. Showcased the course at an engineering expo with a live Allen-Bradley PLC-controlled train demo.

  • Co-developed 10+ modules with labs, lectures, HW, and quizzes
  • Created instructional videos and written lab guides
  • Live PLC-controlled train demo at engineering expo

Quanser Cart Control System

Developed a full mathematical model and transfer function for a motor-driven cart, then designed, tuned, and validated PD and PID controllers against time-domain performance specifications using MATLAB simulation and live hardware testing.

  • Derived transfer function and state-space model
  • Tuned PD and PID controllers to time-domain specs
  • Validated on Quanser hardware with MATLAB/Simulink

AVR Smart Alarm & Light Hub

Designed and built a multifunction embedded system on an AVR microcontroller, integrating alarm logic, peripheral control, and inter-chip communication into a single cohesive unit.

  • Alarm logic with stepper-based door lock mechanism
  • LCD status feedback and PWM LED dimming
  • Voltage monitoring + SPI inter-chip communication
